GIOVANNI BATTISTA CATTAINO

Prolific equipper from Friuli, Giovanni is one of the many persons who have fell in love with Sardinia, where he returns every year searching for new emotions. He is a doctor, he climbs for pleasure and because of his passion and in his ten-year career he has achieved excellent results. From a creative viewpoint, he has given us some nice cliffs, equipped with love and devotion, at the moment only in his homeland (but some say that for his next trip on the island he will bring a drill in his suitcase).
A lover of “on sight” climbing, Giovanni loves Sardinia because only here, according to him, you can still find uncontaminated rocks and the real feeling of on-sight climbing…

Where do you live?GB.-Cattaino
In Tolmezzo (UD) in the most northern part of Friuli.

Do you love your homeland or would you want to live somewhere else?
I love where I live!

How did you discover Sardinia?
I came here to climb the first time. I had heard a lot of good things about the island.

Do you come back often?
If I can once a year

Do Sardinian rocks have something special?
Sardinian limestone is incomparable.

What if there wasn’t the sea in Sardinia?
....it would be Friuli (or my grandmother with wheels).....

Would you like to live on the island?
I may answer yes, but I don’t know if I could resist far from home

Which place impressed you the most?
The Gulf of Orosei for its mix of sea, rocks, wild landscape (codule), fish, climbing opportunities.

Is there a route which is worth a trip to Sardinia alone?
Yes. More than one. La Mia Africa or Sole Incantatore for example. You must consider that I have not yet experienced the most renowned ones....

And a route that you would like to repeat?
There are too many nice climbs that I still must face to already think about repeating others...

Where wouldn’t you return?
I have not found a place that I did not like.

What would you do if you lived on the island?
A climber with medicine as a hobby.

Do you believe that too many routes damage or increase the value of an area?
They increase the value.

Do you think that there is enough space for everybody on Sardinian rocks?
Yes, unfortunately.

And how long will this last?
At least until I will be able to come back....
